That’s right, I can point to the exact moment in history when Southpaw Jones met Matt the Electrician. Five whole years ago! I lived in Los Angeles for a year, you see, and I was invited to join something called TourBaby, a joint venture of acoustic musicians traveling up and down the west coast in 2001. ‘Twas on this tour that I noticed flyers for the Electric One, as we seemed to be trailing his own tour by a day or two. I also met a guy named Jason who told me I would enjoy Matt’s music. So when I moved to Houston and got a chance to play an Austin venue called “Cafe Mundi” with Matt, well, I took it.

The rest, as they say, is history. I returned on July 3 and again on September 18, and that’s when we started playing weekly with Bruce Hughes. After a year of commuting from Houston, beginning to feel a bit of support on the Austin scene, I finally moved to the Live Music Capital and never looked back.

Sometimes Matt goes on tour. Sometimes I go on tour. Sometimes we take off for holidays and ice storms. But I bet we’ve logged about 500 hours on the Cafe Mundi stage, in the garden, in the corner, and in the newly expanded corner. We’ve put together a fine set of duets and covers with very little formal rehearsal. We take our show to other places like Georgetown and Dallas, where we just had two excellent gigs last weekend.

That’s the history of Wednesday nights at Cafe Mundi, and you can be a part of that same history tonight, fair reader. Matt leaves for Japan (!) tomorrow, so this is your last chance to see him before he returns with all sorts of eastern philosophy and futuristic gadgets.
