I lost my true Wednesday.

March 28, 2007 By: Southpaw Jones Category: Interesting? No Comments →

Sorry, but I gotta take it easy today. Too many beans on the grittle. Here’s a message I’m sending out to the Austin mailing list and MySpace:

To summarize:

- Tonight is the last MtE/Southpaw Cafe Mundi show until May!

- I will appear on KUT [90.5FM] Tuesday in the noon hour.

- My 30th Birthday Celebration is next Friday, April 6 at Ruta Maya, 9 pm.

That’s right, Matt the Electrician and I will perform tonight at Cafe Mundi, and then we’re taking the entire month of April off. Word on the street is that our friend Nathan Hamilton will rock Wednesdays in April. Matt & I will return on May 2, so come out tonight to minimize your withdrawal symptoms. Grab your copy of our new live CD if you haven’t already.

I’ll return to local radio Tuesday, just after noon, when I’ll play a few songs live on KUT with Jay Trachtenberg. Always fun, and a great opportunity to mention your chance to…

CELEBRATE 30 YEARS of Southpaw Jones next Friday, April 6! That’s right, I’m leaving my twenties behind in a blaze of glory as we’re all entertained by an amazing line-up at Ruta Maya! Performers include Max & Henry, Elroy, Abi Tapia, The Ginn Sisters, Bill Passalacqua, Brian Kremer, Graham Weber, Leatherbag, C-Dar Fevar, Owen Egerton, David Ansel, and Spike Gillespie. Yes, that’s THE C-Dar Fevar, Austin’s sexiest boy band of which I am a member. The show starts at 9, and we’ll go deep into the night to symbolize my further plunge into uncharted adulthood. Check out the poster at http://southpawjones.com, and feel free to spread it around.

I’m as old as Star Wars. Always have been. Details below!

Here’s another view of the college years. Looks like I’m trying to explain something in Beatnik to legendary bassist Scotty-Scott. Perhaps I’m begging him to shut up about Young Fresh Fellows. The band, not the demographic.

2.Is This Interesting?
Thoughts/feelings that just might not matter:

Here’s an anti-poem poem I wrote ten years ago:

I Hate Poetry

I hate poetry
I hate France
I hate words
That seem to dance
Right off the page
Into my ear
To tie their boats
Upon my pier
To sail their ships
Across my sea
Oh, K-I-S-S-I-N-G

Simile, Simile
Why do you cry?
You’re as overplayed
As “Lullabye”
You sob like the victim of a Tyson fight
Or a Tyson date
Or a Tyson dinner
Someone call Mrs. Winner

Where have you gone
Joe D. Metaphor
Our losers turn their
Pretentious pens to you
They choo-choo-choose
To ride your coattails
To the land of expression
They make no impression
They rhyme as well as Gina Gershon
They must hear my confession

That I hate poetry
I hate Lit.
I hate the things
They do with it

Oh, lover
What can I say?
I love you in a rhythmic way
Oh, sweet love
When push comes to shove
You’re like a dove
The only one I’m thinking of
I’d like to take my artsy glove
And slap the taste right out your mouth
Let’s send all poets way down south
Retirement homes provide perfect detention
Old folks give their full attention
We won’t have to sit and listen
We won’t remember what we’re missin’

I’m a dreamer
I’m a schemer
There is no “I” in teamer

And I hate poetry
I hate Spain
I hate words that
Fall like rain
Upon my head
From time to time
Write it despite it
But please make it rhyme.

In the spring of 1999, I said good-bye to college life by performing a show in a lecture hall then falling off a ladder through a table. It knocked the wind out of me, which was no fun, but at least no one asked me to replace the table.

In no particular order:

1. The industrial revolution made it possible to work year-round, since this labor was not tied to the season, and artificial lighting made work possible for the greater part of the day.

2. This nineteenth century work schedule was the most intense work effort in the history of labor.

3. Working all day in my daddy’s garage, driving all night chasing some mirage.

6. ‘Blue Monday’ or ‘Mondayitis’ or “having a case of the Mondays” is a feeling of weariness and apathy that some workers express when starting the work week on Monday.

7. POETS day is an acronym for “Piss Off Early Tomorrow’s Saturday” used by workers in England and Australia, to jocularly refer to Friday.
