Reflections of the Way Life Used to Be

This is a painting of Barton Springs Pool at night by Cindy Stapper. I went nightswimming last night, and I might just go again tonight, because it’s the most wonderful thing in the whole wide world. The water is both a shining emerald in the middle of the city and a massive battery of coolness on a hot summer night. I challenge you to feel more alive than you do the moment you jump into those perpetually 68-degree depths.
Tonight is particularly attractive, as there’ll be a full moon and a live marimba band, Rattletree. Full moon nights include potluck eating (bring and share!) and inevitable howling at the big moon as it rises above the trees.
It is an Austin miracle. Every time I go, I think, “I should do this much more often.” The event goes from 8 to 10 pm, but you can get in free at 9 pm. Visit the Save Our Springs Alliance for more info.
