CD Release Tuesday, July 29 @ Cactus Cafe.

Friends, all I can think about is promoting this dang CD. We’re sitting two weeks from the release, and I’m trying to get all my ducks in a row. I’m also seeking out new ducks, bringing them home, cleaning them up, and then putting them in a row next to the old ducks.

Last night, I went to a public seminar on the online promotion of music. As I walked in, they handed me and everyone else a thick booklet of information. Now I’m not the most environmentally sensitive person in the world, but it seems that a crowd of folks interested in online promotion could probably take a URL home and read the info, you know, online. It was a lot of paper. But I digress.

What’s important? Having a web site. Facebook. What’s the thing you might need maybe? Twitter. Flicker. What are the old standbys? YouTube. MySpace.

Yeah, yeah, but then there’s the issue of getting people to visit all these sites AND come to your shows AND buy CDs. As usual, no one knows exactly how to accomplish this. If they do, they’re keeping it to themselves.

Two things I realized as I daydreamed:

1. It is much easier to promote a product or a piece of art when you have $100,000 to spend on said promotion.

2. The internet can facilitate amazing things, but it can’t make people cool, and it can’t force people to have good taste.

I tried to score a Facebook page, but they won’t let me use “Southpaw,” because it is not my “real name.” Boo! I’m working on that one. Of course, you can still find me on MySpace, and I’ll be right here at southpawjones.com every weekday. It’s what I do. Online promotion…catch the wave!

It all boils down to identity. Your soul is what makes you you. Without a soul, you are controlled by the states your brain happens to be in. Your actions are results of these states that are a product of growing up in a particular corner of this universe. So you become nothing. Your actions are not yours, they are really just part of the universe. Your identity is swallowed up and you have the flavour of an all-vanilla-universe.
