I have submitted CRUELTY to the two local radio stations most likely to play my tunes. If you’re in Austin (or anywhere, really), you can call the following request lines to push for more Southpaw Jones on the air. Please do!
KUT 90.5 (512) 471-2345
KGSR 107.1 (512) 390-5477
It is difficult for me to pursue radio attention, even though part of me really gets a kick out of hearing my voice echoing through the ether. Who doesn’t, right?
One problem is that I personally don’t receive information about new music via radio. My favorite artists and heroes like They Might Be Giants, Dan Bern, Ani Difranco, and Jonathan Richman very rarely pop up on any station, yet they have somehow managed long, self-sustaining careers. I suspect they don’t get much airplay because they are three dimensional artists, and that’s probably one more dimension than most radio stations can handle.
My songs are long, strong, and down to get the friction on. Are they funny? Are they sad? Hey, don’t ask me! That’s up to you, my friend. Radio and television programmers don’t like to leave interpretation up to you. They give you things that scream “I’m funny, it’s ok to laugh!” or “I’m tragic, can’t you hear the orchestra?” Newscasters not only tell you the news, they practically tell you how to feel about the news. Sitcoms actually provide laughter so you know when to half-giggle!
There are bright beacons of hope out there. Shows like The Sopranos, Damages, and The Wire absolutely rely on numerous dimensions and nuance. These are successful shows that adults can’t get enough of. When I hear Bruce Springsteen, Cake, and Aimee Mann on the radio, my heart leaps with joy. Wonderful stuff for full-brained adults! It’s out there, friends, and we need much more of it.
If you are passionate about your copy of CRUELTY, and you want to share the music, please call KUT or KGSR to request a tune. If you live outside Austin and know a station that might dig some Southpaw, please send me their info, and I’ll get them a CD. Thanks!

Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Unable to Sleep Since Little Anna Died.
CHICAGO, Aug. 6. — The loss of Little Anna, a 7-year-year old Boston terrier, which had been the winner of many first prizes in dog shows in various parts of the country, has so affected Mr. and Mrs. Harry Thomas, the owners of the animal, that they have been unable to sleep or eat regularly since the death of the canine on July 26.
