My family and friends seem to be safe after Hurricane Ike struck Texas and Louisiana and everywhere north.

Many of them are without power and some are without water, and who knows how long that will last. It could be weeks instead of days, and southern Texas is not the most pleasant place in September, especially with a lot of standing water around.

The media like to show pictures of the extreme damage in Galveston and flooding in coastal Louisiana, as that is deservedly the top story. But because of this focus, they aren’t sharing the struggles of literally millions of people in Houston who can’t flush their toilets or take a shower.

They are alive and safe and healthy, but they are not comfortable, and it could be days or weeks before normal services return. Perhaps worst of all, these people are without TV, DVDs, and the internet.

They are getting to know their family members and roommates all over again, but everyone is smelly, tired, frustrated, and paranoid about looters.

If ever there was a recipe for hurtful declarations, plate-tossing, and divorce, this is it.

They still need your prayers in Houston.

They also need money and volunteers. Visit the American Red Cross to learn how you can help.

In Austin, we got about ten minutes of rain and a few scattered guilt trips.
