I had a nice, breezy weekend with sweet Maggie. We played Celebrity with fine friends, I ate a BLT, I made my first crab cakes from scratch, we finally watched Once (great flick), and I won a songwriting competition on Saturday.
Yes, I realize that “songwriting” and “competition” go together about as well as “republican” and “regulation,” but it was still fun to win something, plus I scored some gift certificates!
The contest was part of a Political Action Art Auction event at the Austin Art Garage. It’s really an amazing space back there near S. Lamar and Oltorf. The event brought awareness specifically to the Stop Domain Subsidies movement. Vote FOR Prop 2 in November! In a nutshell, some con man developer convinced our city leaders that they should give away millions in sales and property tax to allow for the building of an upscale mall called The Domain. You can read all about it at stopdomainsubsidies.com.
I wrote a new protest song called “That’s Our Domain,” and I won, even though I was reading the lyrics off of a music stand as I performed. Hey, if you’re going to be fresh and topical, sometimes you can’t afford to memorize lyrics.
I enjoyed learning about a local political cause, since I, like everyone else, have been focused so much on the national horse race. It’s funny how national politics can get people so riled up that they forget about all the opportunities to change things on a local level.
Congress is scrambling to figure out this $700,000,000,000 Wall Street bail out, while my city is set to give $65,000,000 to a greedy, opportunistic developer. The sad story is as true nationally as it is locally: When the poor screw up, they get fired, evicted, and jailed. When the rich screw up, they get bail outs, tax breaks, bonuses, and golden parachutes.
If you think about it too much, you can really kill the buzz of winning a songwriting competition.

WILBUR WRIGHT FLIES NEARLY 92 MINUTES
WASHINGTON — Orville Wright to-day received the news of his brother’s record making flight at Le Mans with every evidence of enthusiasm. His sister heard the news in the afternoon from a local newspaper office, and she hurried at once to her brother’s bedside.
