SPRINGFIELD, Mass. — A balloon catastrophe which might have meant the loss of three lives was averted this afternoon by Leo Stevens, who at the height of 1,200 feet climbed from the car into the rigging of the balloon Boston and, poising himself on his elbows, opened the safety valve with his teeth.
